The LSA Innovate Forum provided a unique opportunity to discuss the innovative research funded by the LSA to improve quality of life for current and future Lifetime Support Scheme (LSS) participants.

The LSA has a legislative obligation to fund research, education and programs (REP) that address road trauma recovery. The REP grant program is dedicated to supporting research and projects which advance the frontiers of spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injuries and other road trauma related outcomes. Through this program, researchers can investigate and develop cutting-edge strategies and approaches which could ultimately support the treatment, care and support of Lifetime Support Scheme participants.

The Forum welcomed more than 80 researchers, academics, allied health professionals and public sector employees to the Adelaide Town Hall on Wednesday 25 October 2023. Guests enjoyed canapes and drinks before the official presentations kicked off.

The quality and breadth of the formal presentations was a talking point as three researchers funded by the LSA program and leaders in their field, showcased their work.

Professor Kate Laver from the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University examined the impact of home automation including the social return on investment.

Associate Professor Diana Dorstyn from the School of Psychology at the University of Adelaide discussed research to improve rehabilitation services.

Dr Brenton Hordacre, a Senior Lecturer in Physiotherapy at the University of South Australia presented his research on gait technology to improve physical health after complex trauma injury.

The presentations included a mix of visuals, data, metrics, rationales, and blue sky thinking.

Rick Howe, Chief Executive, Lifetime Support Authority noted the connection between the projects presented and delivering positive outcomes for LSS participants.

‘This was a great demonstration of how we partnered with researchers from 3 South Australian universities to advance road trauma recovery and how the focus is now on translating the results into improved outcomes for very seriously injured people.’

The Forum also featured a Q&A session with a discussion panel including the three keynote speakers, Kylie Smith, Director, Services, Lifetime Support Authority and LSS participant Terry Lee.

This session resonated with the audience as guest after guest directed questions to the panel covering a wide range of topics. The Q&A only eventually came to a close due to time constraints.

The panel discussion fostered collaboration and innovation as researchers and academics joined forces with allied health professionals to discuss applying the research findings in new ways, brainstorming new research angles, and suggesting business cases to fund further work. The synergies were evident as the Forum sparked conversations that continued well into the evening.

Gemma Cooper, Director, People & Partnerships, Lifetime Support Authority commented on the high level of interest and engagement.

‘It was fabulous to see so many people engaged in discussions with experts and professionals in the field and networking with likeminded individuals who share a passion for innovation and disability.’
